Xavier Dolan brings Mommy back home to Montreal

"It's deeply Qubcois film with its language, its vernacular, its attitude, its behaviour and social problems and everything, so I'm very excited to share that with the people here," Xavier Dolan says of Mommy.

Montreal director Xavier Dolans highly anticipated new film Mommy got the red carpet treatment Monday night at Place desArts.

The acclaimed film is finally getting its Quebec release five months after sharing third prize at the Cannes Film Festival last May.

The Guardian review from Cannes described Dolan as a prodigy, saying"Prodigies don't get much more prodigious than this," in reviewing Mommy.

The stakes are high for the 25-year-old director: Will the hometown crowd give him the same love?

A slim, drawn Dolan told CBC News he was excited the movie is opening at home but he knows its tough to please back home.

"I mean, the movie is intended to screen in my hometown forever. You know it was shot in Longueuil, it's deeply Qubcois film with its language, its vernacular, its attitude, its behaviour and social problems and everything, so I'm very excited to share that with the people here,Dolan said.

"Showing it people at home is always sort of tricky you've been sort of validated elsewhere, but what really counts is what Mommy thinks, right?"
