Champlain Heights residents concerned after Irving chemical spill

Residents of Champlain Heights near the Irving Oil Refinery woke up to a strongodour Fridaymorning, after an accidental leak at the Irving Oil Refinery.

Irving Oil confirmed a chemical used to add odour to natural gaswasinadvertentlyreleased,but spokespersonSamantha Robertson said it poses no risk to public safety.

Several people called CBC Newssaying they felt burning in their throats and lungs.

The smell was strong enough that Irving advised a local school to keep children inside and shut any air vents.

Resident and environmental advocate Gordon Dalzell saidair toxicants aren't just unpleasant, they could be dangerous.

"You certainly wouldn't want to be out in the yard all day or taking your child for a walk in this part of the neighbourhood," Dalzell said.

The refinery is under partial shutdown formaintenancework.

Irving expectedthe odour to dissipate by Friday evening.
