N.B. COVID-19 roundup: Another death, 85 new cases

New Brunswick reported another COVID-related death Friday and85 new cases spread across six of the seven health zones.

A person in their 90s in theMoncton region, Zone 1,has died as a result of COVID-19,Public Health said in a news release. This marks the twelfthdeath reported in the past eight days and brings the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 60.

Premier Blaine Higgs offered his condolences to the person's loved ones.

"Hearing of these losses never gets easier, nor should it," he said in a statement.

There were more recoveries, at 97, than new cases.

Forty-one people are hospitalized with COVID, an increase of one from Thursday, with 15of themin an intensive care unit, a decrease of one.No one under the age of 19 is in hospital, according to the release.

A total of 80.2per cent of New Brunswickers aged 12 orolder are now fully vaccinated, up from 80 per cent on Thursday, while 89.2 per cent have received at least one dose, up from88.9.

Of the new cases, 68 or80 per cent were not fully vaccinated, Public Health said.

At least 20 of them are under 10 and too young to be vaccinated, dashboard testing data reveals.

Another 15 are aged 10 to 19, the dashboard shows, but how many of them are under 12 is not provided.

Vitalit reduces services, updates health-care worker vaccination rates

TheVitalitHealth Network has started to reduce services as COVID-19 cases continue to climband has released updated vaccination rates for its health-care workers.

In a situation report report Friday, the regional health authority said it has reduced elective surgeries at theCampbellton Regional Hospital, which has an occupancy rate of 121.8 per cent, with just one COVID-19 patient, who is in intensive care.

The Edmundston Regional Hospital, which has 10 COVID patients, including four in ICU, andhas an occupancy rate of 82.5 per cent, has hadcertain ambulatory care services reduced.

Andconcentrated care beds for patients requiring stringent care and monitoring at the Tracadie Hospital have been temporarily converted to "telemetry beds," according to the report. The occupancy rate for the Tracadie Hospital was not provided.

The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre is at 115.4 per cent occupancy, with one COVID patient, while the Chaleur Regional Hospital is at 91.5 per cent and has no COVID patients.

A totalof 21 health-care employees are off work.

"Our priorities are to maintain the following essential services: emergency departments, urgent surgeries, intensive care, COVID-19 testing within 48 hours, vaccination of the population against COVID-19 and care of patients with COVID-19," the report said.

Vitalitcontinuesto work with itsemployees and physicians to increase vaccination rates and slow the spread of COVID-19 in New Brunswick.

A total of 79 per cent of Vitalitworkersare now fully vaccinated, while 83 per cent have received one dose.

"Numbers dating back to a few weeks or from different sources have recently been made public," the release said. "The Network apologizes for any confusion that this situation might have caused.

"Since vaccination rates of health care workers fluctuate over time, data sources are difficult to access and due to current limitations of our systems, numbers may vary.

Vitalit is trying to improve data collection so it can provide more accurate, timely statistics, the release said.

The Horizon Health Network did not release a similar status report Friday, but spokesperson Kris McDavid provided updated occupancy rates for thefive largest hospitals,which are the ones that care for COVID patients and have intensive care beds.

All but one have decreased since Sept. 23.

• Moncton Hospital: 85 per cent, down from90 per cent

• Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital: 90 per cent, down from 93 per cent

3 more deaths, 37 cases at Sackville nursing home

COVID-19 has claimed three more lives at a nursing home in Sackville, bringing the total to five.

Drew Nursing Home administratorsadvised families of the latest deaths Friday "with heavy hearts."

They also announced there are now a total of 37positive cases of COVID 19 at the118-bed home 28 residents and nine employees. That's an increase of six since the last notice five days ago.

All of the COVID-positive residents live on Chignecto unit, except one who lives on the Beausejour unit and another wholives on Fundy unit, according to the update.

"If you have not been contacted by our NP[nurse practitioner] or RN [registered nurse], then your loved one is not impacted," it said.

All staff and residents are tested twice a week throughout the outbreak, on Tuesdays and Fridays. "The [updates] will continue to be provided once we have the results. The results are normally received within 48 to 72 hours," the notice said.

The home is increasing connections for residents and families through FaceTime and telephone calls, according to the notice. "Please be sure to reach out if you are requesting these visits. Red Cross employees as well as social workers are also in place to help support our residents."

No window visits will be scheduled, and residents won't be moved to the windows, but "if a family member requests to come to a window and wave/see their loved one, it would be acceptable."

"Please be assured that all our staff, the[provincial rapid outbreak management] team as well as all others involved are working extremely hard to contain this virus," the notice said, thanking everyone for their "support, kindness and prayers."

Public Health launches registration system vaccination proof

Public Health has made it easier for New Brunswickersto access their proof of COVID-19 vaccination online.

Instead of having to attend a regional health authority vaccination clinic to obtain a registration codeto createa MyHealthNB account and securely access their COVID-19 information, people can simply type "IR," followed by one of their vaccination dates for the code, using theYYYYMMDD format.

"For example, if you were vaccinated on June 22, 2021, enter this as your Registration Code: IR20210622," the website states.

Thevaccination date must have beenat least fivedays ago to ensuretheirvaccination record has been processed and the date can be verified, the website advises.

The change was made overnight, said Department of Health spokesperson Bruce Macfarlane.

Since then, 200 people have registered, he said in an emailed statement.

On Sept. 15, the province announced proof of vaccination is now required to access most non-essentialbusinesses, services and events.

"I would encourage those who have booked an in-person appointment to cancel it and instead, use this new option," Dr. JenniferRussell, chief medical officer of health, said in a statement.

Cancellations can be done online or by calling 1-833-437-1424.

Anyone 16 or older who has received at least one vaccine in the province and has a valid New Brunswick Medicare number, or another Canadian Health Card number, can register for a MyHealthNB account.

Moncton lab processing record 3,000 tests per day

The Moncton lab is processing a record 3,000 tests per day as it struggles to deal with a surge in demand and get a backlog under control.

"We [are working] like we have never worked before," saidDr. Gabriel Girouard,a microbiologist and infectious disease specialist at theDr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre.

The 3,000 tests represent386 tests for a population of 100,000 people,said Girouard.

"This means that we are surpassing Canada's daily average for the last seven days: 283 tests/100,000 people," he said in an emailed statement.

Roughly two to three per centof the testsprocessed have beenpositive, Girouard said.

Moncton doctor sets up screening clinic to help cut test wait times

A doctor in Monctonhopes tohelp alleviate the wait times for COVID-19 testing in the region by setting up a pop-upCOVID screening clinic.

Dr. Isabelle-Anne Girouard, who works attheDr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, and a group ofnurses have set up a sitein the parking lot of the Platinum Educational Centre,on Amirault Street inDieppe.

Girouard said she wanted to start the clinic after her own family's encounter with COVID.

"My little girl had a runny nose and I got her swabbed, and to my surprise, it came back positive without really knowing because we hadn't been in contact with anyone that was [suspected] of COVID. So I thought I'd try to help out the other moms out there who needed help."

Given the recent surge in COVID cases across the province, the demand for tests has also risen.

As of Wednesday, people in some health zones are waiting an average of four to five days to get an appointment, Department of Health Bruce Macfarlane has said.

On average, it takes another five business days to get the results, unless a case is marked as high priority, in which case the average turnaround time is 24 to 48 hours, Macfarlane said.

The "optimal turnaround time for testing, from administering the test, to specimen collection, to processing and call back is three to five days," he said.

The screening clinic is for people who have at least one symptom of COVID-19 or who have been identified as a close contact ofa confirmed case of COVID-19in the greater Moncton area.

"It's not really the time to use up our lab to swab asymptomatic people because the lab is working extra hard," said Girouard.

During the first two days, she andher team collected270 swabs, she said.

The clinic will continue to operate between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. until Sunday, withGirouardand a dozen nurses volunteering their time.

There are 203 active cases in the Moncton region, Zone 1.

Cases now confirmed at 63 schools, 28 child-care facilities

Sixty-three schools and28 early learning and child-care facilities have had confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the school year on Sept. 7, Public Health said Friday.

That's four more schools than Thursday's total, and two additionalearly learning and child-care facilities.

Severalcases were confirmed Friday at both new andpreviously impactedfacilities across four health zones.

In the Moncton region, Zone 1, apositive case was confirmed at each of the following schools: Moncton High School and Beaverbrook School in Moncton.

A new positive case was also confirmed at cole Champlain in Moncton, which was previously impacted.

In the Fredericton region, Zone 3, apositive case was confirmed at Centreville Community School.

A new positive case was also confirmed at Hartland Community School, which was previously impacted.

A positive case was confirmed at Centreville Child Care.

In the Edmundston region, Zone 4, a positive case was confirmed atcole lmentaire Sacr-Coeur in Grand Falls.

A new positive case or cases have been confirmed at the following schools, which were previously impacted: cole Mgr-Martin in St-Quentin, cole Marie-Gatane in Kedgwick and Polyvalente Thomas-Albert in Grand Falls.

A positive case was also confirmed at Centre de Soins et ducation Mickey & Minnie in Saint Andr.

In the Campbellton region, Zone 5, anew positive case was confirmed at Galion des Appalaches in Campbellton, which was previously impacted.

People who have been in close contact with a positive case will be notified directly by Public Health or the school or facility for contact tracing, according to a news release.

Under New Brunswick'sHealthy and Safe Schools guidelines, schools with cases will close or move to online learning for at least one calendar day to support contact tracing, risk assessments and operational responses. This may includeweekends and holidays, when the facilities would ordinarily be closed.

3 Perth-Andover schools resumein-class learning Monday

Students in Perth-Andover will head back to class on Monday, according to a notice sent to parents and guardians Friday by the superintendent of the Anglophone West School District.

"Today we met with the regional medical officer of health, who reviewed the current situation related to COVID-19 in the three Perth-Andover schools,"Andover Elementary School, Perth-Andover Middle School, and Southern Victoria High School, wrote David McTimoney.

"The recommendation is that in-person learning will resume on Monday, October 4 for all three schools."

Anyone whois experiencing COVID symptoms must stay home and get tested, and anyone under an isolation order must continue to self-isolate, he said.

"We look forward to having students back in the classroom on Monday and appreciate your patience and commitment as we [are] working through these challenging times."

The first positive cases at Andover Elementary wereannounced on Sept. 14, followed by positive cases at Perth-Andover Middle School and Southern Victoria High Schoolon Sept. 16. Additional cases have since been announced at all three schools.

A total of 467,093 tests have been conducted to date, including 2,542 since the report Thursday.

New Brunswick has had 4,272confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with 3,534recoveries so far.

More than 586,000 rapid test kits distributed

Public Health has distributed more than 586,000 rapid test kits through its COVID-19 Point of Care Testing program, according to an updateFriday.

Thisprogram is "designed to ensure workplace operations continue safely, while protecting employees and close contacts," it said in a news release.

A separate program for eligible non-profit organizations, charities and Indigenous community organizations with workers based in New Brunswick is co-ordinated with the Canadian Red Cross.

Rapid tests are also used in managing outbreaks.

Point of care testingcan helpcontrol the spread of COVID-19, said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell.

"When cases are identified early this helps us respond as potential carriers can be isolated, which helps to stop the transmission of the virus," she said in a statement.

"The results of a rapid test reflect a person's status for that moment in time. It is vital that those who have a positive result on a rapid care test kit follow-up with a lab-based PCR[polymerase chain reaction] test at an assessment centre to confirm the results."

KV youth centre at risk of closure

The head of aKennebecasis Valley youth centre says the pandemic has put its future in peril.

The KV Oasis Youth Centre can only operate for a few more months with thefunds it has left,said executive director Sam Risk.

"Due to the pandemic, we haven't been able to have any of our in-person [fundraising] events," he said.

"Normally we have two large events a year, roughly bringing in about $80,000, and we haven't been able to have them for about two years now."

The centre providesa drop-in centre, help with resume writing, babysitting courses, and home alone courses.

Risk says it costs about $300,000 a year to run, but it receives little government funding.

The centre sees between 220 and 440 drop-ins a month, he said.

Nova Scotia reportedreported 77 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, a figure that includescases discovered since the last update on Wednesday. The province now has 240 active cases.Eleven people are hospitalized with COVID-19,including fourin intensive care.

Newfoundland and Labradorreported two deaths and 41 new cases.The province has 180active cases, and seven people arein hospital, including four in critical care.

Prince Edward Islandreported threenew cases on Friday. The province has 11 active cases.

Public Health says symptoms of the illness have included a fever above 38 C, a new or worsening cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, a new onset of fatigue, and difficulty breathing.
