An excavator that crashed through the deck of a 104-year-old covered bridge remains lodged in place nine days later.

The excavator is still suspended between the deck of the the Hammond River No. 2 Bridge and the embankment below.

It is unclear when the excavator will be removed and when the bridge will reopen.

Crews from the Department of Transportation and Insfrastructureare planning a temporary support to be placed under the bridge to stabilize it when the excavator is being freed, said department spokesman Shawn Berry.

The design of the support requires the approval of WorkSafeNB before work on it can begin.
