Ferguson is not liable in defamation trial

Former Saint John city councillor John Ferguson was found not liable in the defamation case brought against him by the Saint John Pension Board.

The jury returned the verdict Tuesday night.

The trial had been going on for 55 days.

The pension board was suing Ferguson for alleged defamatory comments he made starting in 2005 about the board's handling of the pension fund, which had a $47-million deficit at the time. The deficit has since jumped to more than $190 million.
