Fredericton Police Chief Leanne Fitch has called a news conference for Thursday to talk about a number of recent incidents affecting members of her force.

In the most recent incident, an off-duty officer was arrested and charged with impaired driving after a single-vehicle accident on Sunday.

It was the second instance of an off-duty member of the force being arrested for impaired driving this summer.

Both officers have been suspended with pay.

Three other officers are also suspended for a variety of issues.

"We know that the public has many questions on recent events that have affected out department," stated a tweet sent out on the police force's Twitter account on Tuesday evening.

"We assure you that these events are being taken seriously, and are being addressed in due process.

"In order to shed light on some of the concerns, and do our best to uphold public confidence, Chief Fitch will be making a public statement later this week."

The force's media advisory about Fitch's news conference states the police chief will make a statement on the recent suspensions, "and important messages on accountability, transparency, and public trust and confidence."
