Fredericton traffic delays, detours due to '10-12' major projects

With 24major road projects planned forFredericton this year, traffic is snarled and there are detours and delays all over the city.

Projectengineer GregMcCannsaid roadcrews are close to the halfway point.

"We have about 10 or 12 underway," he said.

Two of the biggest headaches are on the city'ssouthside,onRegent Street atProspect Street and atPriestman Street.

The situation is exacerbated by the work on theRegent Street overpass above Route 8, which is closed for three months as part of a $4.8-million provincial infrastructure project.

At Regent and Prospect streets, McCann says traffic has just been shifted.

"Instead of going down on the two paved sections closest to the CBC building, you actually have to go on the granulated material next to the Irving, before being switched backto the pavement.

"Expect some delays."

Thismakes for an odd-looking intersection and may be confusing to motorists.

"Where you used to turn there's a pile ofdirt there now," he said.

Work continues atRegent and Priestmanstreets, butshould be finishedbefore the end of the week.

Downtown at Carleton Street and King Street, the contractor worked all weekend, McCann said, and "They expect to have both lanes open totraffic at some point" on Monday.

Culvert replacement continues on VanierIndustrial Drive andbegan on Monday on the trail between ClarkStreet and NeillStreet on city's northside.

McCann said Greenwood Drive and McLeod Hill Road remain closed to through traffic this week.
