Heavy snow to hit New Brunswick Sunday

Southern parts of New Brunswick are under Environment Canada snowfall warnings as heavy snow is expected in the province Sunday.

The warnings cover a swath from west of Fredericton to Moncton.

CBC Meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says a "quick-moving area of low pressure will bring snow through the Maritimes."

Fifteen to 20 centimetres of snow is expected, with only far northern New Brunswick getting five to 10 centimetres.

Mitchell says the snow should start around 8 a.m. and last through the day. Lighter snow and flurries will persist through Sunday evening.

Winds will not be strong but with occasional gusts of 30 to 50 km/h, the snow will blow around as it falls.

"Along with snowy roads, visibility will be low at times," said Mitchell. "Poor travel conditions to be sure."

Air Canada and WestJet haveissued travel alerts for all three Maritime provinces in anticipation of the storm. Travellers should check ahead with the airlines before heading to the airport.

NB Power is also actively monitoring the weather system.

"For the moment, we have a regular number of crews ready and available pretty much in all the regions in the province, but as the weather system continues we'll reassess the need to relocate crews if needed," NB Power spokeswoman Marie-Andre Bolduc said Saturday.
