Recount confirms Malley loses Miramichi council seat

Former legislature Speaker Michael (Tanker) Malley will not return to his seat on Miramichi city council after his recount left him three votes short.

Malley requested an official recount after the May 14 election that saw him three votes behind Peggy McLean.

He is now in agreement with the outcome of the election, according to Elections New Brunswick.

Malley won two terms as the MLA for Miramichi-Bay du Vin.He became Speaker of the New Brunswick legislaturein 2006, but he lost his re-election bid later that year.

Malley won a seat on Miramichi council in 2008. In that race there were 10 council-at-large positions available and Malley finished in ninth position.

Elections New Brunswick is still in the process of finishing a series of recounts across the province.

Candidates have until today to request a recount from the May 14 election.

Earlier this week, thethree tie votesin Bertrand, Saint-Louis-de-Kent and Cambridge Narrows were all settled.

On Wednesday, Wesley Gullison in Upper Miramichi conceded to the results of the May 14 election after counting the advance results.

Recounts were completed for Millville, Centerville, Bath, Le Goulet and Gagetown Wednesday with no change on Wednesday.

Candidates who come within 25 votes have the option of filing for an official recount.
