N.B. asks to extend term of lieutenant-governor

New Brunswick has taken the unusual step of asking Ottawa to extend the term of the lieutenant-governor.

New Brunswick has taken the unusual step of asking Ottawa to extend the term of the lieutenant-governor.

Both the Liberals and Conservatives have endorsed the idea of extending Lt.-Gov Hermngilde Chiasson's term for an additional year so he still holds office when the province hosts the World Acadian Congress next year.

Liberal Bernard LeBlanc introduced the motion. He said Wednesday it would be good to have a French-speaking lieutenant-governor when the congress is held on the Acadian Peninsula.

Chiasson is also from that area.

Thousands of people will converge on the Acadian Peninsula next August for family reunions, cultural events and celebrations.
