New Brunswick weather: Hurricane Joaquin could bring showers

Many parts of southern New Brunswick are still drying out after a powerful rainstorm drenched the province this week and another round of heavy rain could be heading for the province.

A stretch of fair weather over the weekend could be the calm before the storm if Hurricane Joaquin stays its current course, according to CBC meteorologist Peter Coade.

"The latest thinking on HurricaneJoaquinis it is now expected to track in our direction to becentredsouthwest ofYarmouth[N.S.]by late Tuesday," he said.

"If thatcourse holds up, we could see a lot more rain by Wednesday or Thursday."

Many parts of New Brunswick arestill drying out after heavy rain pounded the province on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, causing washed out roads and bridges in the south.

Schools are closed CambridgeNarrows, Cole's Island, Gagetown, as well as Belleisle Elementary and Belleisle High because of significant damage to local roads and bridges.

The rainstorm also caused about a dozen car accidents. There were also several cases of vehicles crashing as a result of washed out roads.

The RCMP also said one fatality was linked to the storm.

The rainstorm that soaked New Brunswick has since moved into Nova Scotia, according toCoade.

Some parts of New Brunswick could see some sun on the weekend, ahead of more wet weather.

"This fair weather feature will bring a clearing during the day Saturday and make for amostly sunny Sunday," he said.

Coade says more wet weather is expected in the Maritimes on Monday and Tuesday with even heavier rain on Wednesday and Thursday if Hurricane Joaquin remains oncourse.

Friday forecast

In northern New Brunswick, Friday will be cloudy with a few showers in the northeast, while the northwest will see some morning sunshine before skies cloud over with scattered showers in theafternoon.

Winds will be from the north at 20 km/h in the northwest, 50 km/h in the northeast with a high of 10 C.

For the Fredericton area, Friday will be cloudy with a chance of showers, winds from the northeast at 20 km/h and a high near 12 C.

In southern New Brunswick, Friday will be cloudy with scattered showers, winds from the northeast gusting to40 km/h, and a high of 12 C.
