RCMP officer guilty of drunk driving awaits sentencing

A RCMP officer on New Brunswick'sAcadian Peninsula found guilty of driving dangerously while drunkwill have his sentencing hearing next week.

Baba Sars problems started as he was leaving a wine festival in Caraquet in the summer of 2012.

According to a judgment filed in New Brunswick provincial court, a fellow off-duty officer said Sar had a lot to drink at the festival, but he left in his BMW around 1:30 a.m.

The Mounties had set up a roadblock close to the festival to catch drunk drivers.

They said the Tracadie-Sheila officer sped up before brakingjust before reaching the police manning the roadblock.

The officers said they were scared and reached for their guns, but when they recognized it was a fellow Mountie they decided to let his superior deal with the situation.

According to the documents, they told Sar to settle down and let him go.

But then Sar blasted away from the roadblock.

This time the officers got into their cruisers and tried to chase him down with lights and sirens blaring, but Sar got away.

An officer was sent to his house, where Sar failed a breathalyzer test.

He was arrested and a judge found him guilty in November 2013.

His sentencing hearing will be Feb. 21 in Tracadie-Sheila.
