Saint John woman dies after parking lot attack

A 28-year-old woman died from her injuries after an attack Monday morning on Saint John's east side in a parking lot.

A 28-year-old woman died from her injuries after an attack Monday morning on Saint John's east side.

Saint John Police have a suspect in custody. He is due to appear in court Tuesday to face charges.

Police were called to the end of Rothesay Avenue at about 9:30 a.m., where a woman had been assaulted in a parking lot in front of a localbusiness.

She was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later died of her injuries.

Sgt. Pat Bonner said the police arrested a 30-year-old man in west Saint John.

"All we know so far is the victim and the suspect are known to each other. So it wasn't anything that was random," Bonner said.

Bonner said the man was arrested without incident.

Bonner isn't commenting on whether a weapon was used in the attack, but said the woman suffered serious trauma to her body.

He said police officers interviewed some witnesses and are hoping others can come forward with information.

"Rothesay Avenue is quite a busy thoroughfare and this took place in a parking lot on Rothesay Avenue and after all it was 9:30 in the morning and she was viciously attacked," Bonner said.

"So therefore someone may have seen something and probably never thought anything of it so we would like to hear from them."
