Hot weather prompts closure of 25 salmon pools in Miramichi area

Twenty-five salmon fishing pools in the Miramichi area will be closed to angling for all species of fish, starting on Tuesday, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has announced.

High water temperatures and low water levels prompted the closures, according to a news release.

Salmon are cold water fish. When air temperatures rise, that pushes up river temperatures as well, causing stress for the fish.

The Miramichi,Renousand Cains rivers are affected. A complete list is available on the Fisheries and Oceans website.

There is no word on how long the closures will remain in effect.

Three other salmon pools along the Miramichi River, also listed on the website,will remain closed until Dec. 31, the release states.

Similar restrictions were put in place last summer.
