Princess Margaret Bridge repairs further delayed

The Princess Margaret Bridge will be closed for at least another month, as the $77.4-million repair project continues to be delayed.

The Princess Margaret Bridge will be closed for at least another month, as the $77.4-million repair project continues to be delayed.

TheFredericton bridge projectwas supposed to be open on Sept. 5, but the Department of Transportation is pushing the date back to Nov. 15.

Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside met with officials from the Department of Transportation and SNC-Lavalin, the contractor, on Monday.

Afterwards, Woodside confirmed the latest delay.

"The bottom line, the date, the latest date, will be Nov. 15. We're hoping sooner, but we're not going to say that because we don't want to create an expectation," Woodside said.

"Nov. 15 there will be traffic after that date going across the Princess Margaret Bridge, that's been the [confirmation] we've got."

A public meeting will be held Wednesday evening at Willie O'Ree Place so residents can ask their own questions about the delay.

When the delays started in August, SNC-Lavalin said heavy rain this summer had slowed construction work.

It is estimated that roughly 20,000 vehicles travel across the Princess Margaret Bridge in Fredericton every day when it is open.
