Fredericton summer construction continues into autumn

The summer road construction may be coming to an end, but that just means the fallroad construction season has officially begun in the capital city.

Many projects in Fredericton are still not completed, with others set to begin that will requiredrivers to be alert.

Greg McCann, a project engineer with the city of Fredericton, said the city tries to keep construction going as long as possible.

"We try to squeeze as much as we can into the period that we work," said McCann.

Of the 24 major construction projects that the city had undergone this summer, the city has completed about 16.

The most obvious example of one of the projects not completed is the Regent Street intersection. While the paving has been completed in the intersection itself, there is still more work to be done.

"The city project for the most part is complete. There is an overhead sign structure that needs to be installed and some paving to meet up with the [overpass]," he said

Construction on the overpass is the responsibility of the provincial governmentand McCannsaid heisn't aware of any completion date for it.

Road construction at the York and Aberdeen intersectionis coming along as well. The majority of the underground work at the site has already been completed, but the street will be down to one lane when paving starts.

Construction is also ongoing on the Princess Margaret Bridge, but like the Regent Street overpass it is a provincial construction project.

Work will soon be starting at Two Nations Crossing, where the city will be working on storm sewers and paving.

"That project won't all get done this year, but it will start probably sometime before the end of the month," said McCann.

Other construction projects are close to completion.

The project on Greenwood Drive is expected to be completed either this week, or early next, with only paving remaining.
