Former campers of a popular YMCA campground outside Saint John are fundraising to make improvements to the camp that has been operating more than 85years.

Camp Glenburn on the Kingston Peninsula has hosted hundreds of thousands of people.

"It's been around long enough that we're actually seeing multi-generational campers going, people whose grandparents and parents had also gone," said Greg Bishop chair of a committee trying to raise money for capital improvements.

"The camp moved to its current site in 1950 and in the next two decades afterwards, the dining hall, cabins and all sorts of auxiliary buildings were built. And the Y has done a great job of maintaining them, but, still, time has had an effect," said Bishop.

Saturday night, the fundraising committee threw an indoor beach party with money raised from ticket sales and a silent auction going back into the camp.

It's part of a three-year plan to spiff up Camp Glenburn and to build new.

Camp director, Pip Nightingale would like to see an open-air covered space.

"Just more space for kids to be sheltered from that climate."
