2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games open in Conception Bay South

Top young athletes across the province are competing in the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, which kicked off Saturday in Conception Bay South.

Top young athletes across the province are competing inthe Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, which kicked off Saturdayin Conception Bay South.

More than 1,500 athletes between the ages of 12 to 18 are expected to take part in the games, which runs from Aug. 13-21.

EightNewfoundland and Labrador regions are invited to play at the games, as well asSt.Pierre& Miquelon.

As well, this year will feature thefirst-ever Aboriginal teams Team Nunatsiavut, Team Innu Nation, Team Mi'kmaq and Team NunatuKavut.

The Games committee says the whole community comes together to help with the event, including some 500 to 700 volunteers who will be working hard to make them a success.
