Newfoundland-inspired 9/11 musical Come From Away Broadway-bound

The award-winning musical Come From Away is about to step into the theatre world's biggest spotlight.
The Canadian musical is set in Gander, after 38 planes were diverted to the town on September 11.

After playing to sold-out crowds and garnering critical success on the west coast of the United States, the 9/11 musical Come From Away is set to step into the theatre world's biggest spotlight, opening onBroadway in the spring of 2017.

The theatre magazinePlaybill tweeted the news early Tuesday morning.

The musical, written by Canadian husband-and-wife teamIrene Sankoff and David Hein, fictionalizesthe events in Gander, after 38 flights were diverted to the small town on Sept. 11, 2001.

Also onTuesday morning,MirvishProductions announced Come From Away will make its Canadian debut this year,playing in Toronto in November and December of 2016.

Come From Away opened to rave reviews in San Diego,California, in 2015 where it became the highest-grossing show ever at La Jolla Playhouse.

Since then it has also played to sell-out crowds in Seattle and garnered numerous awards and critical acclaim.
