Alcohol poisoning death sparks recommendation for awareness campaign

Newfoundland and Labrador's Child Death Review Committee has made recommendations following the death of a child due toalcohol poisoning.

The committee recommended that the province review its education strategy that teaches junior high and high school age students about the dangers of alcohol use.

A statement from theDepartment of Justice and Public Safety did not identify where and when the death had occurred, or the age of the young person who passed away.

It was also suggested that the Department of Education launch an awareness campaign with involvement from parents or family members of children who have died from alcohol consumption.

The report was given to the Department of Justice and Public Safety on June 17, and has been forwarded to the Child and Youth Advocate.
