As residents of the small community of Bay de Verde watched the biggest employer in the region go up in smoke Monday, people from the province and country watched the event unfold on social media.

As residents of the small community of Bay de Verde watched the biggest employer in the region go up in smoke Monday, people from the province and country watched the event unfold on social media.

Politicians, plant workers and residents of the eastern Newfoundland town took to social media in shock and dismay as a massive fire ripped through the QuinlanBrothers fish plant, taking out more than 700 jobs in the region.

Some offered condolencesto the residents of the town most of whom were evacuatedfrom their homes Monday morning, but have since been allowed back inside.

Seven fire departments were called in to help battle the massive blaze for hours. The work of those firefighters was not forgotten.
