One of Newfoundland and Labrador's best known performers is organizing a concert to raise money for people forced out of their homes by wildfires in Fort McMurray.

Alan Doyle tweeted his intentions Thursday afternoon, saying the fundraiser will be held Thursday, May 12 at the Factory in St. John's.

Doyle, who said he has played in Fort McMurray many times, was moved by the images coming out of northern Alberta.

"I think, like everybody else, Iwas just horrified for the people," he said. "It just felt like as a human being, I was scared to death."

Doyle described Fort McMurrayas "a second home" for people from this province, and one of the few "new communities" in Canada.

"It feels like such a blow in a place that was really just coming into its own."

Other performersat the fundraiserinclude Tim Baker of Hey Rosetta, The Irish Descendants and HotxProxy with more performers to be added later.

"We're all going to gather and sing a few songs," said Doyle.

"We'll announce a time where we'll send it out across the web everyone in Canada will join us and we'll all sing Sonny's Dream for the people up inFort Mac."
