Court case for alleged Bay d'Espoir arsonist pushed to April

The court case for an alleged arsonist who police believe set fire to three community buildings in Milltown-Head of Bay d'Espoir has been pushed to next month.

Donald Craig MacHaight, 48, appeared in provincial court in Grand Falls-Windsor on Wednesday by video link from Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre.

MacHaight is accused of starting the Jan. 17 fires that levelled Bay d'Espoir Academy, as well as damaged the town hallwhich housed the fire department and the local RCMP detachment.

In February, heunderwent a psychiatric assessmentthat determinedhe is fit to stand trial for three counts of arson.

He was scheduled to enter a plea when he appeared in court on Wednesday.

However, MacHaight'sdefense has asked for the case to be set back as they continue to review materials related to the case.

He is now scheduled to appear beforea judge in April.
