One of the ways CBC Newfoundland and Labrador is marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel is by delving into our archives.

We've found television documentaries and reports made over the decades on the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, and we're posting them online where you can enjoy them.

There are stories about heroes, veterans and everyday soldiers, as well as archival film of the Regiment training at Quidi Vidi and fighting in the trenches of France.

Among those pieces is a report Here & Now host Jonathan Crowe did in the 1980s on Tommy Ricketts. The 17-year-old from White Bay was the First World War's youngest recipient of the British Empire's highest honour: the Victoria Cross.

There's a report on John Shiwak, an Inuit hunter from Labrador who became a valued sniper in the battlefields of France.

From 1961, there's a documentary called The July Drive, which has incredible film footage of the Regiment and then-premier Joey Smallwood with dignitaries as they dedicated the park at the site of battle.

There's a report about David MacFarlane's book The Danger Tree, which is based on the Goodyear brothers of Grand Falls-Windsor.

This week, we have also started posting new material we've created to mark the centenary of the First World War.
