Bidgood's faces charges of illegal moose sales

A popular St. John's store has been charged with trafficking big game, although officials say the violations are not related to poaching.

A popular St. John's store has been charged with trafficking big game, although officials say the violations are not related to poaching.

The owners of Bidgood's, a supermarket in the Goulds neighbourhood best known for selling traditional Newfoundland foods, have been charged with unlawfully possessing big game and three charges of trafficking big game.

Wildlife officials with the Newfoundland and Labrador government seized cooked and uncooked moose meat from the store earlier this year.

A government official, though, said the violations are technical.

Store manager Rick Bidgood said the store mistakenly let its licence to sell big game lapse.

He said the store has since renewed its licence and is selling moose again.
