Brandon Phillips case proceeds as lawyers receive evidence

The lawyers for Brandon Phillips, the man accused of fatally shooting a patron of a St. John's hotel bar early this month, have received disclosure on the case, a court heard Friday.

Lawyers forBrandon Phillips, the manaccused of fatally shootinga patron of a St. John's hotel bar early this month, have received informationon the case, a court heard Friday.

Phillips, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the death LarryWellmanat the Captain's Quarters Hotel on Oct.3.

During a provincial court appearance, Phillips's lawyers Jeff Brace and Mark Gruchy indicated they have received some information or disclosurefrom prosecutors in Nova Scotia.

Statements and surveillance video were part of the package received by Phillips'sdefence team.

Phillips smiled at a small group of people in the courtroom, who were there to support him, but didn't say anything during the appearance.

Prosecutors Mark Heerema and Shauna MacDonald, who spokeover the phonefrom Halifax, were brought on to the case Tuesday because of a possible conflict.

During the status update, the prosecutors allowed search warrants inthe case to be unsealed.

An application was brought forth by Gruchy and Brace to have access to those documents.

Phillips's case will be called againNov. 9 for another status update.

A bail hearing date has not yet been set, butdefence lawyers have indicated their client would be a good candidate for bail.
