New charges against accused murderer Brandon Phillips

Accused murderer Brandon Phillips made a brief appearance in a St. John's courtroom Friday morning, and is now facing additional charges in connection with the shooting death of Larry Wellman.

The Crown has added charges of committingan offence while disguised, assault with a weapon and carrying a firearm without a licence.

The casewill be called again in provincial courtOct. 23 for a status hearing.

Defence lawyer Mark Gruchytold the court that Phillipsis a good candidate for bail, and asked to have the matter brought back before the court as soon as possible.

Phillips is also represented by a second lawyer,Jeff Brace.

Phillips is facing first-degree murder and armed robbery charges in relation to an Oct. 3 robbery at the Captain's Quarters Hotel in St. John's.

It's alleged that Phillips shot Wellman, 63, after he intervened during the robbery attempt.

Phillips, 27, was arrested Saturday evening, following a week-long manhunt.

Following Phillips's court appearance, Brace told reporters he's concerned about the limited amount of information provided by prosecutors.

He said the defence has received a "single sheet of paper," and this is delaying the bail application for Phillips.

"We're concerned about it," said Brace.

Meanwhile, the court has ordered that Phillips not have any contact with long list of people, including his mother, Deborah Phillipsand his girlfriend, Jade Ball.

Jade Ball is the daughter of Dwight Ball, leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Phillips is also restricted from having any communication with Marcel Etheridge, owner of Captain's Quarters Hotel, the employee who was working during the robbery, and any member of Wellman's family.
