Brigus couple finds 2-inch nail in Russet potato

In another instance of food tampering, a Brigus couple's supper was spoiled over the weekend when a woman spotted a nail embedded inside one of their potatoes.

Ray Clarke's wife was cutting a baked potato to serve with steak dinner Saturday when she discovered a two-inch nail driven through one of the spud's eyes.

Clarke says he couldn't believe it. "Spoils your appetite, I can tell you that," he said

An Atlantic Canada recall was issued by Loblaws and Strang's Produce after three people found metal objects in potatoes in Nova Scotia, N.B. and P.E.I. this month in possible food-tampering cases.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced the recall Saturday, saying consumers should not eat some varieties of Strang's Chef, Farmer's Market and Strang's Produce potatoes.

Clarke bought his 10 pound bag of Farmer's Market Russet potatoes at a Dominion grocery store in Mount Pearl.

"It makes me shiver to think of anyone who would do the likes of this, and that could cause grave damage to anybody. If you sunk your teeth into that, that nail would go into the top of your mouth unbelievable to me that anyone would do that," he said.

Clarke said he was equally surprised when police didn't appear to be concerned by his call.

"They weren't interested at all, they didn't even want to see the potato, they just said 'bring it back, get your money back for the potatoes,' but I'm not concerned about the money, I'm concerned about somebody really getting injured with this."
