Cabin owners protest mineral exploration near Salmonier Line

A group of cabin owners is fighting a mining company's proposal to build a road into a wooded area off Salmonier Line.

Eagleridge International Limited wants to build the 11-kilometre road to reach an area it wants to explore for resources near the Salmonier Nature Park.

However, cabin owners and outdoor enthusiasts in the areadon't like the idea.

Vincent Dawson, who owns a cabin in the area, is against the proposal because he has fears of irreversible damage to the land.

"Once a road is in place, it does a lot of damage in the area," he said.

"There's a lot of pressure in that area. There's a lot of pressure on wildlife, a lot of destruction happens to the land in the area."

A need to organize

Dawson thinks people in the area need to mobilize to prevent the road from being built.

"This is for future generations," he told CBC News.

"We have to be concerned about what our impact is. Looking at previous roads and the destruction that it does. It's something that everyone needs to be concerned with."

The provincial environment department approved the Big Triangle Pond Mineral Exploration Access Road proposal late last fall.

Cabin owners in the area filed a court appeal against the decision in November.
