Cargo vessel runs aground off Rose Blanche

A cargo vessel off the southwest coast of Newfoundland ran aground at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A cargo vessel off the southwest coast of Newfoundland ran aground at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, N.S., the 180-metre bulk carrier John 1 ran aground about 1.6 kilometres from Rose Blanche.

A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched from 103 Squadron in Gander to remove the 23 people aboard the ship.

All 23 were taken off the John 1, and were being taken to Burgeojust after 4 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

Marine Atlantic commercial ferry crossings in the area were cancelled earlier on Saturday due to high winds.
