Deaths of 2 youths examined by child death review committee

The deaths of two Newfoundland and Labrador youthsin separate circumstances has led to recommendations by the Child Death Review Committee.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety received two reports of fatalities from the committee on Dec. 4.

The first involves a youth who died suddenlywhile living in residence at Memorial University.

It's recommended that the university review policy and establish protocol related to "entering residence rooms when there are concerns about the health, safety and well-being of a student."

MUN has released a statement saying it will"fully comply with the minister's request and has already begun a review of its policies and procedures."

The report did not specify how the youth had died and university officials say they will not be releasing any details about the death.

Recommendations were also made in relation to a death caused by hypothermia.

The committee suggests that the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services develop a transition program for youth leaving care, which would involve support and mentoring for one year.

As well, it's recommended that the department collaborate with the "Innuhealth and social services programs in the development of this program forInnuyouth."

The report notes the incidents happened in September 2014 and February 2015, respectively.
