Consider natural gas for energy needs, Bruneau urges

An engineering professor at Memorial University in St. John'ssays natural gas should be considered for generating electricity in the province.

Consultants working for Crown-owned Nalcor Energy have concluded that hydro power from the proposed Muskrat Falls hydroelectric projectis the best option for the island of Newfoundland.

However, theanalysis did not look at generating power with the natural gas already produced in the provinces offshore.

At a presentation last night, Stephen Bruneau argued that position was short-sighted.

"Natural gas is available in the timeframe and quantities that we need," Bruneau said. "The costs for the infrastructure tell a very compelling story."

Bruneau said there are many similar projects already operating elsewhere, and is urging the province to reconsider natural gas.

He disputes claims that, without Muskrat Falls, the province's energy supply will be in jeopardy.

"It would be an insult to Newfoundland Labrador Hydro or Newfoundland Power to hear anybody say that the lights are going to be going out if we don't hurry up and sanction this 50-year contract," Bruneau noted.
