With winter comes snow shovels, sore backs and short days, but to combat the seasonal struggles, cricket players in St. John's picked up wickets, bats and balls for winter league play.

The 2017 winter cricket season ended on Sunday with a handful of matches at the PowerPlex and the handing out of the championship trophy.

"This is a game that everyone enjoys and it brings ustogether," said Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador's GurmanKhurana.

"It's just a way to get out in winter and have some exercise."

The wildly popular sport worldwide is growing in this province.

"When I got here [in 2009] there was hardly a league," Khurana said.

"We only had around seven or eight players; mostly students, playing with a tennis ball. Now we have over a hundred members in the league."

Even though it's growing, Cricket NL is always looking for new members and for anyone looking to play or try out the sport, to get in touch online.

When the dust settled Sunday, and the scores were tallied, the NL Avengers won the title and bragging rights until the summer league starts.

There is no rest for the wickets though. Khurana said there is an Eastern tournament coming up in which a team from this province will compete against players from P.E.I., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.
