Discarded cabin removed from illegal dumpsite

A cabin that had been dumped in a gravel pit about 30 kilometres east of Gander is being moved to a regional landfill.

A central Newfoundland hunter found the debris last week while going through the woods. The case attracted widespread media coverage, and the ire of government officials who said charges may be laid over the case.

At the time, it was thought that the debris was what remained of a house.

A Gander resident subsequently contacted the government and took responsibility for the debris, which he said had once been a cabin.

He also told the province he would arrange to have the debris moved to the dump in Norris Arm.

A loader and a dump truck were at the site on Tuesday, and had removed about half of the cabin.

A decision on whether the Crown will prosecute the case in court has not yet been made.
