Theworkers who install elevators and escalators in Newfoundland and Labrador are on strike.

Their contract with elevator companies Otis andThyssenKrupp expired in July.

Art Careen,a union leader with the International Union of Elevator Constructors.said negotiations have gone nowhere since thesummer.

"Two weeks ago, the companies called back and said they weren't interested in doing no more negotiations," said Careen.

"We're available to negotiate if they want. But when we made our last call to them, they weren't interested in doing any more talks," he said.

Careen said the companies want concessions such as lower pay for new employees.
