Flat Bay powow kicks off with traditional Mi'kmaq wedding

This year's powwow in Flat Bay started with a special ceremony: A traditional Mi'kmaq wedding.

Bride Cindy Hepditch and groom Perry Young exchanged bannock, vows, rings and feathers during the rare ceremony.

Conne RiverChief Mi'selJoe officiated at the event.

"I follow my culture to the core," said Young.

"It's very special to me to be married this way. It's a positive enlightenment on my culture and my life."

This year marks the tenth running of the powwowin Bay St. George.
