Former Lt.-Gov. Max House dead at 87

Former Newfoundland and Labrador lieutenant-governor and telemedicine pioneer Dr.MaxHousehas died.

House, who was the province's 10th lieutenant-governor, serving from 1997-2002,died Thursday morning.

He was 87.

Born in Glovertown in 1926, House went on to study at Memorial College in 1943. He then pursued a medical degree in 1952 from DalhousieUniversity.

House then furthered his medical career, with a specialty in neurology at the Montreal NeurologicalInstitute. Once training was completed in 1959, House returned to practice in St. John's where he was the province's sole neurologist until 1966.

As one of the people instrumental in the establishment of the Memorial University's medical school, House spent 30 years there as a professor of neurology.

In 1975, House started the telemedicineprogram, and remained there until his retirement from full-time university faculty status in 1993.

House received several prestigious awards during his career, including the Canadian Medical Association's Medal of Excellence, in 1997.

He was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 1990, and in 2005was appointed as an officer.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Gower Street United Church in St. John's.
