Oh baby: Gander obstetrician among 11 new specialists hired in central Newfoundland

Central Newfoundland's health authority is hiring 11 new specialists, including two obstetricians/gynecologists in Gander.

Pregnant women in the Gander area no longer have to drive to Grand Falls-Windsor for regular checkups or for their deliveries. Central Health has hired two new obstetricians/gynecologists for the fall. (CBC)

Central Newfoundland's health authority is hiring 11 new specialists, including two obstetricians and gynecologistsin Gander.

James PatonMemorial Regional Health Centre in Gander has been without a obstetrician since April, which means no patient has been able to deliver their baby there in months.

Obstetrical services are expected to resume in Gander this fall.

Central Health has also hired twopediatricians, a clinical associate (OR) and two internists for the Gander hospital.

In Grand Falls-Windsor, the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre will be getting a newanaesthetist, psychiatrist, pediatrician as well as a urologist.

"Physician recruitment has a number of challenges, including national competition for a limited pool of specialists," Dr. Jeff Cole, VP of medical services for Central Health said in a release Wednesay.
