Filling up a car tank became a less expensive Thursday across Newfoundland and Labrador, with the latest weekly setting from the Public Utilities Board.

The PUB dropped maximum prices that retailers can charge for gas by 3.0 cents per litre. Because of rounding for taxes, the drop may be slightly less.

The change means that a litre of unleaded self-serve gas on the Avalon Peninsula must cost no more than $1.335. Some retailers charge considerably less.

That's the lowest price since late January.

Maximum prices vary across the province, from $1.353 on the Northern Peninsula to $1.388 in western Labrador.

Meanwhile, the PUB dropped the price of diesel by about 1.6 cents per litre.

Prices for furnace oil and stove oil dropped by 1.41 cents per litre.
