Gathering Place receives financial boost toward goal

On Wednesday, Husky Energy announced a donation of $200,000 for the Gathering Place in St. John's.

Fundraising to renovate and expand services at the Gathering Place in St. John's continues to move ahead.

On Wednesday, Husky Energy announced a donation of $200,000 to the service centre, to help promote the literacy and computer skills its clients need to find employment.

Malcolm MacLean, senior vice-presidentAtlantic region, said Husky is proud to support a charity that helps those struggling with complex problems.

"Yesterday [Tuesday], I was able to see first-hand the great work being done," said MacLean.

"I've reflected on the fact that despite the prosperity that the oil industry has brought to Newfoundland and Labrador, there are still many in our community who struggle to meet their basic needs."

To date, the Gathering Place has raised more than half of the money it needs$4 million of its $7 million goal.

The community centre is expected to reopen in January 2014.For now, it will continue to operate from The Lantern on Barnes Road.

The Gathering Place is a non-profit organization that wasfounded in 1994. Their programs and services are offered primarily to members of the community who are homeless, or who live in less than desirable housing conditions.
