Happy Valley-Goose Bay rec facilities need replacement, says mayor

Jamie Snook, mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, says an audit of the town's recreational facilities are so run down, it would make more sense to replace the facilities rather than maintain them.

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has said it desperately needs new recreation facilities, and now it has proof.

Mayor Jamie Snook said an audit of the aging infrastructure shows the swimming pool, curling club and arena are so run down, it would make more sense to replace the facilities rather than maintain them.

Snook estimates it would cost the town $20 million to maintain the facilities.

"There is a need a desperate need, and we're motivated to make sure that we can bring a new wellness centre to Happy Valley-Goose Bay," Snook said.

"These are basic amenities that the fifth-largest town in the province should have. So we're adamant that we need to reinvest in our town."

Snook said new facilities will cost about $45 million.

The town is looking for financial assistance from both the federal and provincial governments, as well as the private sector to help pay the associated cost.
