Garbage piling up in wake of dump closure

Garbage is piling up near Grand FallsWindsor, across the river from the town's former pulp and paper mill.

At least one resident said more people are dumping there since the local landfill closed. Garbage is now shipped to the regional dump in Norris Arm, almost 40 kilometres away.

A lot of the trash is bagged household garbage that could have been left on the curb for regular garbage collection.

"It's everywhere all over town ... everywhere ... every little bin. They're throwing it in bins people are paying for. They arethrowing it in dumpsters," said resident Laurie Ballard.

Shes calling on town officials to deal with the problem.

"The town is not taking the initiative to come up with a solution," she said.

No one from the town was availablefor comment.

Not all of the trash behind the mill is household garbage. Some of it is commercial waste. Among the bags, there was also a pile of crates used for shipping Arctic Cat snowmobiles.

Employees at the local dealership said they don't know how the cratesended up in the woods, but they said they would be removed.
