Labrador flags to 'officially' fly at N.L.-Quebec borders

The Labrador flag will be flown "officially" at the two border crossings with Quebec in southern and western Labrador, according to Newfoundland and Labrador's minister of Labrador and aboriginal affairs.

Minister Keith Russell, who also serves as MHA for Lake Melville, made the announcement in the House of Assembly on Monday.

Russell said two flag poles will be erected in the coming weeks and will be celebrated in two ceremonies.

"I am very proud to be a part of an administration that listens to what the residents of Labrador are saying," Russell said. "Flying the Labrador flag is an important milestone for this symbol which is recognized by all Labradorians."

However, the flag was hoisted unofficially by residents in September, after pressure on the provincial government to fly the flag proved fruitless.

At the time, then-Labrador affairs minister Nick McGrath said the flags currently raised represented the entire province as a whole, and government had no plans to change that.
