Lawn resident pleads guilty to running contraband smokes

A senior citizen on Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula has pleaded guilty to dealing with illegal cigarettes.

A senior citizen on Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula has pleaded guilty to dealing with illegal cigarettes.

Gerald Joseph Edwards, 60, a resident of Lawn, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to violating the federal Revenue Administration Act during an appearance at provincial court in Grand Bank.

Edwards had been charged under the part of the law that stipulates that "a person who purchases, possesses, acquires, transports, stores or sells contraband" has committed an offence.

RCMP seized 186 packs of illegal cigarettes in Lawn last November.

Edwards has been given 12 months to pay a fine of $3,327.20.
