Man arrested with multiple weapons in N.L.

Police found numerous weapons including a rifle, crossbow and a machete in the car of a Nova Scotia man on his way to western Newfoundland on Sunday. Police arrested the man after receiving a complaint he was planning to kill police in the Corner Brook area.

Mark Baltzer, 53, of Somerset, Kings County, N.S., was arrested Sunday for breaching conditions of his undertaking for being outside the province of Nova Scotia, as well as numerous firearm and weapons offences.

Police said Baltzer was arrested without incident.

In a news release Monday, the RCMP said its officers found boxes of rifle ammunition, a high-powered rifle, a crossbow, a bow, numerous arrows and a machete in Baltzer's car.

Baltzer took a ferry from Nova Scotia to western Newfoundland Sunday.

RCMP members from Port Aux Basques and Stephenville, with the assistance of the police dog service, found the man's vehicle once the ferry arrived, and stopped the vehicle near St. Georges on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Baltzer is in custody in Stephenville, where he is scheduled to appear in court onTuesday, June 22.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be laid.

Baltzer isdue in Provincial Court in Kentville, N.S., on June 28 to opt for a trial by either judge or jury and enter a plea on two charges of uttering threats, one charge of mischief and one charge ofresisting a public officer.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Nova Scotia on April 5, 2010.

On April 6, 2010, Baltzer signed an undertaking to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, report his whereabouts to RCMP in Kings County and attend court as directed. He was also ordered not to possess any weapons.
