Man dead after St. John's crash

A man in his fifties is dead after an SUV crashed into three construction workers on the Outer Ring Road near Thorburn Road in St. John's Tuesday afternoon.

A man in his fifties is dead after an SUV crashed into three construction workers on the Outer Ring Road near Thorburn Roadin St. John's Tuesday afternoon.

The two other menwere inserious condition, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

CBC News has learned that the man who was killed was an employee of the provincial department of transportation. He was doing work on the highway at the time.

The SUV was travelling east on the Outer Ring Road in the rain when police suspect the driver lost control. Police said theadult male wasn't injured, but was quite shaken by the accident. The vehicle is now slated for a full mechanical inspection.

Boththe east and westboundlanes of the highway were closed for nearly eight hours as the RNC continued to investigate the cause. The roadreopened just before 9 p.m.
