Labrador, Northern Peninsula digging out from 3-day storm

A blizzard warning remains in effect early Monday morning, as people in southern Labrador and Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula dig out after a weekend of stormy weather.

Photos shared on social media show snow levels up above front doors of houses.

In St. Lewis, Labrador, one person said the snow near the harbour even reached the top eaves of someone's home.

As of early Monday, the Transportation and Works websitesays it's still too stormy to operate snowclearing equipment around Red Bay, Lodge Bay, St. Lewis and Cartwrightareas.

Blowing snow conditions can be expected to continue Monday morning, with gusts up to 80 km/h creating zero visibility conditions.

Those windy conditions are expected to dial back by afternoon, but Environment Canada warns travel may be difficult until then.

Meanwhile, in central and western Newfoundland, a number of schools are closed for the morning due to weather conditions.

The highway traffic websitelists snow squalls and poor driving conditions in Bay St. George, St. Anthony, Deer Lake, Gros Morneand Plum Point.

A special weather statement is in effect for parts of central, including Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander areas, as periods of snow and drizzle are expected to continue throughout Monday.

Snowfall between five and 10 centimetres can be expected through the day.

An extreme cold warning is also in effect for western Labrador through Monday.

Temperatures near 36 C with wind chills reaching 45 C can be expected.
