Media attention annoys accused in animal cruelty case

A Winterland farm ownercharged with animal cruelty in January was back in court in Grand Bank on Wednesday, and wasn't pleased with the media attention his case is receiving.

Tony Barrett is accused of one count of animal cruelty, one count of causing an animal to suffer, and three counts of permitting an animal to be in distress.

At the courthouse, Barrett began taking photos of Martine Blue, who was reporting on the story for CBC News, and bumped into her camera.

Back in early January, police searched Barrett's property and discovered five dead calves, two dead sheep and a dead goat among living animals.

Police also found a number of dogs living in unsuitable conditions.

Barrett pleaded not guilty to the charges in court on Wednesday.

The Crown suggested that the trial will take two days, with three or four veterinarians called in as expert witnesses.

Barrett is scheduled back in court on July 21 and 22.
