Memorial University officially buys The Battery

Memorial University has finalized its purchase of the former Battery Hotel in St. John's.

The deal officially closed on Friday.

The university paid $9.5 million for the St. John's landmark. It plans to spend up to another $16 millionon renovations.

Memorial's president Gary Kachanoski said the acquisition will help the university deal with its pressing need formore space.
