Missing Labrador teen snowmobiler found dead

A 14-year-old Makkovik boy who has been missing since Sunday has been found dead.

A14-year-oldMakkovik boywho has been missing since Sunday has been found dead.

Police said the teen's body was found out on ocean ice seven kilometres from the nearest point of land. The boy's tracks headed away from his community on the north coast of Labrador.

Using a helicopter, police said they were able to follow the prints from the snowmobilefound on solid ice near open waterfor about 19 kilometres.

Tuesday night, military aircraft patrolled the area on Labrador's north coast using heat-seeking cameras.

Helicopters and ground teams continued the search Wednesday.

Officials first thought the boy's snowmobile went through the ice, about nine kilometres from Makkovik, but Tuesday they found his snowmobile on the other side of the open water.

Police have not released the missing teen's name.

The 14-year-old left his home to go to his grandmother's house early Sunday afternoon. Hearrived, dropped off his cousinandthen left again. When he wasn't seen by 7:30 p.m., police were called.
